Like a swallow she was drawn back to the Mediterranean and the brilliant light that informed the work of so many modernist artists. In April 1931 she went to stay with Maude and George Burge in the villa they had rented in Saint-Tropez. Their villa was on the inward slope of the cliff at the far end of the town, near Paul Signac’s famous pink house with its large windows picked out in deep green tiles. Rather than the sea, it was the expansive fields, farm buildings and villages leading across the plains to the inland mountains that became the backdrop for Hodgkins’ inspiration. In Cut melons, first exhibited in 1932, Hodgkins uses the landscape–still-life format that Howell had encouraged her to develop, but here the fruit is set against a rarely used architectural backdrop, the side walls of the building zigzagging at irregular angles into the deeper landscape. Hodgkins was a remarkable colourist, and her murky tones of aquamarine and cream are blocked and contained by a longer wall of rich red ochre that stands like a signal box near a single olive tree. Its stark branches are silhouetted against the pale sky, which is differentiated from the walls and foreground by a few wavy ‘clouds’ scratched into the paint surface with the end of her paintbrush. \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThis is a painter’s painting, every section drawing attention to its compositional gambit; the range of textural marks both patterns and ‘signature’. Hodgkins teases us with her brief white parallel dashes placed in the lower left of the deep-set window, suggesting ripples of light on water, subtly stretching our sense of the real. Melons, jugs and pedestal dishes — all favourite subjects — nestle in a crinkled cloth that animates the foreground. An upright slice of fruit defies gravity, lining up with the edge of the window so that the eye is drawn wittily from organic material to constructed form. Like a ‘pop-up’ picture in a book, each section is dependent on the next for its compositional and visual integrity. In Cut Melons, Frances Hodgkins combines the genres of still life and landscape that resulted in her most innovative work. A still life of melons and pottery jugs set out on a cloth is set against a distant landscape of tree and building. Hodgkins makes no distinction between the foreground and the background. Instead, she uses the shapes and colours of the various elements to create an ambiguous and exuberantly decorative space. An unconscious surrealist Cut Melons was exhibited in the early 1930s. \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eA reviewer described Hodgkins as 'an unconscious surrealist' who 'takes things from any level of the consciousness and then tries to establish connexion between them . . . She is at her best, perhaps, in persuading still life objects that they really belong to the landscape.' A leading modern painter In 1940, the British critic Raymond Mortimer described Hodgkins as 'the most inventive colourist in England'. Hodgkins was part of the Seven and Five group, along with artists such as Ben Nicholson and Barbara Hepworth. Her work was firmly part of the avant-garde in England. Yet this counted against her in New Zealand. Cut Melons was one of six of her paintings offered to the National Art Gallery in 1944, and turned down. It was eventually purchased in 1980. Both studios opened on to a shared kitchen, and the three friends met for meals in the evenings and often hosted parties together. Between them they had a wide social network, and the Cambridge Terrace studios soon became a hub of the local art world, attracting writers and musicians as well as painters. Angus was thirty years of age in 1938, a poised and outspoken young woman who already had a reputation as one of the leading painters of her generation. Bensemann, who was four years her junior, was just beginning his long career as a designer and printer for the Caxton Press. Both had a keen intelligence and a fertile imagination, and they also shared an unusually wide-ranging interest in art, from the ancient to the contemporary. \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eLiving side by side, they often painted together, and both produced some of their finest work, including a number of portraits, during this period of close friendship. Bensemann made at least six drawings and paintings of Angus, while her four surviving images of him include this small yet compelling oil. \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eLeo Bensemann presents an intense, charismatic young man who holds the viewer’s attention with his challenging stare. Angus has planned the composition with care, exaggerating the lean angular planes of her subject’s face so that the V of his chin and jacket echo the diagonal movement established by the plunging mountains. Although Rutu certainly bears a striking resemblance to the artist, her letters to composer Douglas Lilburn reveal that she regarded the painting as an imaginary portrait rather than a self-portrait. \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eAngus described the genesis of the painting to Lilburn in June 1944: ‘I began with the water colour of my Father before me, and your portrait at the end of the room. My memory served me well, about three hours later a child about 16 or 17 years of age, like my family, but not mine; she belongs to you. Of European birth, simple, monastic, Western schooling, you will find her in the paintings on the walls of the Temple Caves of India, where wandering Yogi priests sheltered, in the Bodhisattvas of the Buddhist shrines where the Chinese worshipped, in the flower and tea ceremonies of the Samurai. The Geisha and the Priestesses of the Shinto shrines of Japan.’1 The painting is an elaborate fusion of traditions, ideologies and culturally diverse iconography. Rutu, named after the wife of the Ngāti Toa leader Tāmihana Te Rauparaha, was initially rendered as a young Western woman, but over time she developed into a racially mixed goddess with dark skin, blonde hair and blue eyes, seated on a decorative throne facing inland from the Tasman Sea. The white lotus is a further cultural reference — an Egyptian motif and homage to an ancient civilisation admired by Angus for the advanced social status enjoyed by women. \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eRutu and the related paintings A goddess of mercy, 1945–47 (Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetū), and Sun goddess, 1946–49 (private collection), are key members of a suite of allegorical portraits that project Angus’s ideas about pacifism, womanhood, multiculturalism, spirituality and the important role played by the artist in society. That year she and her fellow Bottle Creek resident, the poet Sam Hunt, made a road trip to visit friends who lived near the small rural settlement of Mangaweka, near Taihape. When they stopped in the main street, White immediately noticed the truck parked in front of an old wooden building. ‘The truck belonged there,’ she recalled. She admired the ‘Mangaweka’ on the door and how it ‘blended with the lines of the building and the curves of the hills beyond’. She took a series of photographs — close-up views and shots incorporating the background: ‘I saw the painting before I ever painted it.’\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eBack at Bottle Creek, White was busy with other projects. Late in 1971 she left for Dunedin, bought a cottage at Portobello, and became acquainted with the Otago Peninsula landscape. It was not until 1973, now married and expecting her first child, that she had the chance to develop the painting she had earlier envisaged.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e Mangaweka shows the influence of Rita Angus, an artist White greatly admired, in its stylised linear forms, flattened space and brilliant light. It is structured according to a taut, irregular grid, and bisected by the dramatic line of the veranda. White suppresses unnecessary detail, focusing on the crisp geometric form of the building sandwiched between the truck and hills. She signs her name on the door, inscribing herself in the picture and alluding to the painter’s role in transforming the way we see the world. Like much of White’s early work, Mangaweka takes a small slice of small-town New Zealand and transforms it into an archetypal image — a painterly parallel to Sam Hunt’s poetry.
