Featuring a paikea / humpback whale, a pīwakawaka / fantail and a humble bumblebee travelling the world together.
At the beginning of each winter the paikea / humpback and other whale species travel north from Antarctica to the Pacific and are often seen from both sides of Aotearoa. They are known for travelling in pods, or multiple family groups, typically calving in the calmer waters off atolls, islands or larger land masses. In November and December, the whales return south to Antarctica.
According to Māori oral traditions, whales guided canoes to Aotearoa, and the ancestor Paikea is even said to have arrived on one.
